I would rather see this type in cdist-contrib as in core cdist for now. You would also need to move the logic from gencode-remote to the manifest: that's still quite a bit of work.

Related: do you think a more generic type using ip and other utils to configure interfaces is useful? There are no network interface types that I can see, and I wonder how others configure interfaces with cdist.

I generate the interface file (or systemd network units) locally using a template, and push it with __file.
